Malibu to Palisades: Paul Shikhvarger of Pacific Jewelry Watch Appraisers & Buyers: The 411 on Appraisal Services
Article Sharon Levinsohn
Paul Shikhvarger turned his passion for jewelry, watches and gemstones into an enjoyable, successful business. The owner of Pacific Jewelry Watch Appraisers & Buyers in Pacific Palisades has assisted a myriad of multi-generational clients learn the value of their jewelry, watches and gemstones, often appraising for clients’ insurance policies after a theft or loss.
Since 2001, clients have regularly sought out his expertise at performing appraisals for estate purposes, including equitable distribution, dissolution of marriage and investing. Paul notes that appraisals should be updated every three years, because valuations of items can fluctuate. As insurance policy premiums reflect the value of the appraisal, accurate and current valuations are essential. He adds that some homeowner and renters’ policies do not cover jewelry and watches and he urges clients to ask their insurance agents about policy details.
“It is extremely important that people seek out an educated, experienced and independent appraiser,” says Paul. “I take great pride in providing every client with an expert, professional appraisal that reflects my training and my industry knowledge. It is quite gratifying to assist my clients with all of their appraisal needs and to receive so many referrals.”
Having performed thousands of appraisals for legions of satisfied clients during the past 20 years, Paul is highly skilled at providing detailed descriptions of jewelry and watches, including information on design, style, metal content, gemstones and valuation. He can also provide additional information about the time period that jewelry and watches were produced—from vintage to contemporary pieces—and each client receives a printed, bound appraisal report. Paul’s dedication to his clients is enhanced by his industry credentials. Paul is USPAP (Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice) compliant. Additionally, he is a Graduate Gemologist from the Gemological Institute of America and a member of the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers. He takes continuing education classes with the ASA (American Society of Appraisers), the N.A.J.A., and the G.I.A. to keep current.
With the increase in home thefts—particularly on the Westside of Los Angeles—many of Paul’s clients are requesting updated appraisals of their valuables. Noting that many jewelers—or jewelry store employees—are not qualified or trained to provide accurate appraisals and that they often assign the wrong value to jewelry and watches, Paul ensures his clients receive accurate valuations and thorough, professional appraisals.
Customers often seek out Paul’s appraisal services after inheriting watches or jewelry. Paul offers a purchase option, allowing clients to buy other jewelry or items of their choosing. Whether for appraisals or selling, clients receive truly personalized customer service at Pacific Jewelry Watch Appraisers & Buyers. Friendly and low-key, Paul strives to ensure every client is happy and holds himself to the highest ethical standards. His clients continuously praise his expertise and integrity, providing word-of-mouth referrals and helping to grow his business. Paul is available to meet with clients at his Palisades office as well as at their homes, offices or bank vaults.
